This program is partially funded through a Community Development Block Grant.

About GHALP
The Greater Haverhill Adult Learning Program (GHALP) is a volunteer tutor program designed to help adults improve their English Language proficiency, reading, writing and math skills, and study for the GED.  Priority is given to Haverhill residents, but we also accept students from other towns. Se habla espanol!

Hours
Anne Powell, Program Coordinator, is usually in the office about 25 hours every week. Her schedule varies from week to week, but is always posted for viewing on her door. Please call ahead for an appointment rather than just dropping by, as she is often tutoring during these hours. Contact Anne at ext. 623, or the Library Information Desk (ext. 608) for more information.

Volunteer tutors always needed!
The program usually has a student waiting list of at least two months.  You can help!  You can tutor days or evenings, at a time convenient for you, and we provide training.  Many of our students and tutors become lifelong friends.

Most of the GHALP's students are foreign adults who need to improve their English.   These students are highly motivated, hard-working, and extremely grateful to have a native English speaker who can spend at least an hour a week with them.  Our tutors tell us that they love the opportunity to help someone, as well as to learn about the life and culture of another country.  At any given time we have students from twenty or more countries.

** DID YOU KNOW? - You do NOT need to speak a foreign language to be an ESL tutor!

The GHALP also needs tutors for American-born students who need to improve their basic reading, writing or math skills, or who need help in preparing for the GED (high school equivalency) exam.  There are hundreds of adults in Haverhill who are functionally illiterate and can benefit immensely from one-on-one help.  Passing the GED can enable an adult to get a decent job and get off welfare for the first time in his or her life.

If you can commit to one hour a week for at least three months, please call Anne Powell at 978-373-1586 x623, or e-mail apowell@mvlc.org.
