This May, let HPL help transform your garden!

Start by checking out our gardening book display on the first floor-you’ll find gardening books, Haverhill Gardening Club membership forms & May event calendar, and several local plant sale flyers.

We’ve also created a book list with the most current and helpful gardening titles. You can request books right from the list using your library card!

If you want to view gardening titles on your eReader, tablet, or computer, be sure to visit the OverDrive website and search “gardening”. There are several popular titles available to you.

Lastly, if you’re looking for a specific gardening question, try using Infotrac’s online Gardening, Landscape, & Horticulture Collection- search over 3,000,000 articles from nearly 50 journals!

Happy planting!

I often hear folks say that reading comic book doesn’t really count as reading. It’s a trained response, really. I’m not going to say that everyone out there is going to LOVE every comic book or graphic novel ever. That’s silly. We each come at reading a little differently and we each find the appealing in what we read in our own unique way. Still, there’s this slight nose crinkle that twitches up automatically when I recommend a graphic novel series to someone who doesn’t believe such works are *real* books. And I just want to say…the world of literature is so much bigger than we can imagine. As cliche as it is, sometimes a picture truly is worth a thousand words.

Case and point: a recent xkcd (webcomic), at first glance, is just kinda a cute strip. The world is sad. The world is wonderful. The world is big. Huh. Cute. Whatever. But then there’s more… That final panel – about being big – click on it and drag. There’s a lot more to that story than just the first page.

And, I’d say that’s the case about many of our graphic novels. Fun fact. A study done in 1988 established that comic books had 53.5 rare words per 1000. That’s a little more than adult novels (at 52.7) and a lot more than “educational” television shows like Mr. Rogers or Sesame Street (only 2 rare words per 1000). What’s that mean? Comic books build vocabulary. How really awesome is that?

Interested in trying something new? If you’re unsure of where to start, there’s a lot of directions to go.

Want a classic? Try Moby Dick, retold by Lew Sayre Schwartz. Or maybe Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 is more your style.

So you like your novels? Ever try a graphic novelization? Daniel X by James Patterson is a fun place to start. Or A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. Or Stephen King’s The Stand.

Of course there’s the deep ones too… Like Laurie Sandell’s The Impostor’s Daughter about a young lady struggling with her identity when she realizes her father was a compulsive liar and everything she thought she knew about him was just a tale.

Or the story of a heroine with questionable sanity in the Joe Kelly’s I Kill Giants.

Or the entirely wordless but evocative Arrival by Shaun Tan. (This book probably taught me the most about learning to read…despite the lack of words!)

And, yeah, there’s the zombies and men in capes too. Walking Dead by Kirkman or Batman by Loeb.

So, next time you’re dropping by the library to grab a book to read, don’t shy away from the ones with pictures. They offer a lot more than what first meets the eye!

Already have a card? Why not add an email address to your account, or sign up for a Library newsletter?

As students head back to school this September, we encourage parents to visit Haverhill Public Library and make sure their children and teens sign up for the most important school supply of all: a library card.

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country remind parents and caregivers that a library card is the smartest card your can own. We are pleased nearly 65% of Haverhill’s residents held library cards as of June 30, 2012; we’d love to increase that number to 100%.

When it comes to achieving academic success, a library card provides students with access to a world of both print and electronic resources. Students can access free databases, online homework help and attend programs, activities and clubs that provide an added value to the educational experience. No wonder that 84% of Americans agree that the public library is important to education!

Today’s students learn differently than their predecessors, with studies indicating that students most effectively learn when they are allowed to follow their personal interest. Libraries and librarians are on the frontlines of engaging these students, making a library card an essential tool for inspiring a passion for learning.

Today’s libraries provide children and teens with access to new and innovative software and tools for shooting and editing videos, creating their own web comics, composing music and writing blogs. Not only that, but the library comes with an expert in developing original programs and honing these new skills – a librarian. What better place is there to explore and develop new interests then at the library?

This September, open the door to a world of possibilities for the student in your life and sign up for a library card today!

If you’ve been catching up on your sleep since the end of school, you’re missing out! Haverhill Public Library has a kids (Grades K-5), teens (Grades 6-12) and adult (18+ and out of school) summer reading program. Sign up and log how many books you’re reading – there’s prizes, glory and more!

And, teens, it is time to get serious about your summer reading!

Teens and Adults are competing to see which group can read the most books this summer. Right now, the competition is awfully close: teens have read 166 books and adults are just behind with 162 books. Everyone knows this shouldn’t be a competition. If every teen in Haverhill logged the books they’re reading for the school summer reading assignments alone, we’d have upwards of 1,000 books read. And, honestly, do you really want to let the adults show you up?

Get out there. Sign up for summer reading! Get your friends to sign up! Log your books!

Remember, if you read 4 books this summer, you can come to the Teen Zone and collect your certificate for a free appetizer at Pizzeria UNO.

The Haverhill Public Library offers the following free Beginning Internet Classes in June. Registration begins May 22nd.

Internet I: Using a Mouse and Surfing the Web , 6/5 at 1:15 p.m.
For those who have never touched a computer or have limited mouse skills, this class will introduce the basics of using a computer mouse and keyboard. We will then visit a number of Internet sites and learn some basic web browsing skills. Finally, you will learn how to go to a web site when you know its address.

Internet II: Searching the Web, 6/12 at 1:15 p.m.
The Internet is a great source of information, and can also be lots of fun! In this class, we will begin by reviewing material from Internet 1. Then you will learn how to find good web sites and information using Google and other search tools. The class will allow ample time for you to practice what you have learned and to do some searches of your own. Note: In order to take this class, you must have taken Internet 1 or have good mouse skills.

Each class is offered once a month. Check the Calendar of Events for upcoming dates and times. Classes are small, with lots of individual attention and hands-on practice. Each class is 2 hours long. You do not have to own a computer to take these classes but you are welcome to come with your own wireless enabled laptop. Classes require advance sign-up. Sign-ups will begin May 22nd. To reserve a spot, please come to the Reference and Information Desk at the library or call 978-373-1586 x 608.
