Are you a cat lover and wish to figure out the feline mystique? Then you definitely want to read “The Cat Whisperer” by Mieschelle Nagelschneider. The basic premise: to look at problems from the cats’ point of view. Key topics include outside the litter box activities, aggression with humans or other cats, clawing, and even excessive meowing – all things that come naturally to cats and drive people crazy!

Nagelschneider’s writing is fluid and accessible, and the book is organized in such a way that you can read it cover to cover, or browse through it as needed. I can’t recommend The Cat Whisperer highly enough if you have cats, whether or not you’re dealing with problem behavior.

Truly a must read for anyone who wants cats to do what humans desire.

Look for it in our new non-fiction section, or place a hold.

The cover caught my eye, the recipes inside delight! Author and self described “homecook” Deb Perelman begins her cookbook with a snapshot of her tiny kitchen in New York City, complete with lack of counter space and creative storage. One feels that if she can create these wonderful recipes from her tiny kitchen, then surely so can we!

The Smitten Kitchen covers it all, breakfast, salads, sandwiches and tarts, main dish meals both vegetarian and nonvegetarian. Oh and then onto the sweets, party snacks and fun drinks. Some fun recipes that caught my eye: Leek Fritters with garlic and lemon, Pancetta, white bean and swiss chard pot pies. Ms. Perelman’s spin on pumpkin pie is Marbled Pumpkin Gingersnap Tart, the photo of the final product beckons you to try it. Check out this book and see if you are as inspired to try some of these recipes. If you really like her style, follow her blog and gather even more cooking ideas: smittenkitchen.com

I rarely pick books about books, or books about dying. But right after my mother-in-law was diagnosed with a terminal disease, I came across this one, and it said to me “Read me now!” I am one of those that think that books choose you as much as you choose them. This one came into my life just at the right time.

The background story is about Mary Anne Schwalbe who has been diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer. Will, her son, vows to be as supportive to his mom as he can. Will realizes that the best way he can help his mom, engage her, and open up the lines of communication is to talk about their shared passion: books.

So he and Mary begin sharing books, and every time the two see each other, they discuss the books they read. In the process, Mary begins to reveal more and more about not only her vast experiences, but also her emotions and her fears.

So while “The End of Your Life Book Club” is about books, it’s really the story of an amazing woman (and amazing she is, as you will discover), and also the story of a mother and son recommitting to their relationship through a shared passion.

I had read only a few of the books that Will and Mary discussed, but that did not detract me from the pleasure of reading this book. If anything, it has caused me to add a few more titles to my ever-growing list.

This book is available in multiple formats. Look it up in our catalog!

Regular print, large print, and audiobook:

The first time I opened the book “More Than Human” by renowned photographer Tim Flash and author Lewis Blackwell, I got hooked right away. The first picture I came across was of bats, and my reaction was “I never saw bats looking that beautiful”. They looked like they were in a photography studio posing for the camera, with a very theatrical lighting effect. Just stunning! And then I couldn’t stop… The book showcases a menagerie of creatures—pandas, tigers, dogs, lions, orangutans, cobras, bullfrogs, chimpanzees, wolves, porcupines, elephants, owls, armadillos, among many others—as they have never been seen before. An extraordinary body of work in which each image is more striking and powerful than the last. Definitely a “must see” book!

The Gale Virtual Reference Library is a database of eBook reference titles on a diversity of subjects such as Arts, Biography, Business, Education, Environmental Studies, History, Law, Literature, Medicine, Multicultural Studies, Nation & World, Religion, Science and Social Sciences.

A database of eBooks means that you have access to the book itself in electronic format, complete with downloadable full text and images that you can search, view, print or email from a computer or any smart device.

If you think this is not enough to replace our physical collection, the Gale Virtual Reference Library also offers you the option to translate the text in many languages (Arabic, French, Spanish, Chinese, German, Italian, Russian and more). The system will generate a translation of the current document and display the translated text in a separate browser window. Reading the translated text is not enough for you? How about listening to it in the language of your choice and downloading it as a MP3 format?

Still want more? This new reference option is available to you 24/7 from the comfort of your home, or on library hours if you access it from one of our computers.

You can find the Gale Virtual Reference Library on our website. Under the “Information” tab, click “Electronic Resources”, and look under the subject “General Research”. And while you are there, why not explore other electronic databases.

Any question? Ask a librarian, 978-373-1586, x608.

Already have a card? Why not add an email address to your account, or sign up for a Library newsletter?

As students head back to school this September, we encourage parents to visit Haverhill Public Library and make sure their children and teens sign up for the most important school supply of all: a library card.

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country remind parents and caregivers that a library card is the smartest card your can own. We are pleased nearly 65% of Haverhill’s residents held library cards as of June 30, 2012; we’d love to increase that number to 100%.

When it comes to achieving academic success, a library card provides students with access to a world of both print and electronic resources. Students can access free databases, online homework help and attend programs, activities and clubs that provide an added value to the educational experience. No wonder that 84% of Americans agree that the public library is important to education!

Today’s students learn differently than their predecessors, with studies indicating that students most effectively learn when they are allowed to follow their personal interest. Libraries and librarians are on the frontlines of engaging these students, making a library card an essential tool for inspiring a passion for learning.

Today’s libraries provide children and teens with access to new and innovative software and tools for shooting and editing videos, creating their own web comics, composing music and writing blogs. Not only that, but the library comes with an expert in developing original programs and honing these new skills – a librarian. What better place is there to explore and develop new interests then at the library?

This September, open the door to a world of possibilities for the student in your life and sign up for a library card today!

The Haverhill Public Library offers the following free Beginning Internet Classes in June. Registration begins May 22nd.

Internet I: Using a Mouse and Surfing the Web , 6/5 at 1:15 p.m.
For those who have never touched a computer or have limited mouse skills, this class will introduce the basics of using a computer mouse and keyboard. We will then visit a number of Internet sites and learn some basic web browsing skills. Finally, you will learn how to go to a web site when you know its address.

Internet II: Searching the Web, 6/12 at 1:15 p.m.
The Internet is a great source of information, and can also be lots of fun! In this class, we will begin by reviewing material from Internet 1. Then you will learn how to find good web sites and information using Google and other search tools. The class will allow ample time for you to practice what you have learned and to do some searches of your own. Note: In order to take this class, you must have taken Internet 1 or have good mouse skills.

It is a visual film, but it is also blessed with dialogs and good music. It deals with common and real youth and family issues in Iran, and potentially in other countries. Circumstance is about two liberated, free-spirited 16 year old high school girls, Atafeh and Shireen. They are best friends and seem together all the time. They go to underground Tehran parties, flirt with boys, experiment with sex and drugs, and often get in trouble. At times they daydream of a better life away from Iran together. But they are more than just friends… The international cast and crew have each taken big risks by telling this gripping story about two young women in love in Iran.
