I am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced by Nujood Ali
Nujood Ali grew up in the small town of Khadji, located in Yemen. The women in Yemen are not taught how to stand up for themselves or how to make their own choices in life. The man of the house is the person that makes all the decisions for the family. With no work in town, the family moves into the city of Sana’a. Here, Njuood’s father is hoping for a better job opportunity.
At the age of ten, Nujood has to drop out of school to help support the family by panhandling on the streets. With no education and little to no life experience, Nujood’s childhood comes to a sudden stop. Her father announces that her “time has come” and that she is to be married in one month to Faez Ali Thamer, a man three times her age. When Nujood goes to her mother to ask for help, all she gets is the cold shoulder.
Nujood is now ten years old and married to man in his forties. On the way to her new home and life, Nujood looks at her husband and thinks he is the devil. She starts to cry, knowing her life is about to change forever. This is where Nujood’s story begins. The powerful story of how a ten year old girl finds the strength to stand up for herself and changer her future and the lives of so many others.
