This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage by Ann Patchett
While Ann Patchett does talk about marriage in her latest book, this is not just a story about marriage. Told through 22 essays, “This is the Story of a Happy Marriage” is a memoir of her life from early years up through present day. Many of the essays are pieces that were previously published in various magazines that Ms. Patchett has written for. The essays are engaging insights into the author’s life. We hear about her parents’ divorce which led to several moves in childhood, lasting friendships including the bond she had with a nun who was one of her more strict teachers as a young girl. Patchett also shares how she explores subjects that she is writing about, often embedding herself into whatever environment she is researching; scaling 6 foot walls while participating in training with the LA police academy or driving a Winnebago through Yellowstone National Park.
Whether you want to write or just enjoy reading about writing, this book will fulfill some of the curiosity you may have about the writing world. If you have read any of the other books that Ms. Patchett has written you may enjoy hearing about their beginnings here. If you haven’t read any previous work, you are in for a treat.
