“The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie” by Alan Bradley

sweetness-trade-paperback-imageFlavia de Luce is a precocious and lonely 11-year-old living in a moldering estate in rural England not long after WWII. Her father ignores her (unless he’s taking her to task over her latest peccadillo), her older sisters either torment her or dismiss her, and her one friend – the family man-of-all-work – is often in his own shell-shocked world.  But Flavia has her love of chemistry and her laboratory, which keeps her interested, if not entirely satisfied. So when she discovers a man breathing his last breath in the garden, she is thrilled instead of horrified and jumps with both feet into her own investigation.

Flavia is an absolutely delightful character who will charm you even while exasperating you. Highly recommended in audio book format!
