“American War” by Omar El Akkad

Omar El Akkad’s debut novel, American War, is a heartbreaking story set during an imagined Second Civil War in the United States. In addition to being politically and economically fractured, the country is ravaged by climate change and disease. The reader follows Sarat, six years old at the outbreak of the war in 2074, and follows on her journey from innocent, curious child to hardened, tortured guerilla fighter. Her transformation is sparked by the tragedies of war- lost family members, displacement, poverty, torture, and fear. American War is a beautifully written novel, but not for the weak of heart.
