“Sourdough” by Robin Sloan

Cover imageWhen Lois Clary is offered a prestigious job in her field of robotic software engineering before she even graduates, she is thrilled and expects great things to follow. But soon after arriving at her new job in a new city, she falls into a mind-numbing routine of hours of work followed by stumbling home to her empty apartment late at night with lines of code running through her head. Her only real human interaction is with two brothers who run a food delivery service in her neighborhood. When the brothers have Visa issues and have to leave the country, they leave her their sourdough culture, asking her only to keep it alive and learn how to make bread. At first unsure, Lois soon discovers that there is much more to this particular sourdough than she could have imagined.  This kicks off an unexpected journey into the amazing world of underground food markets, and brings something to Lois’ life that she never knew she needed.

This is a fun and quick read for those who enjoy the journey as much as the destination.
