What Volunteering Does For You!

Image of teen volunteers picking up trash on a beachThere’s an old song that starts out with “summertime and the living is easy”. It’s true sometimes: school’s out! Your general obligations are occasionally making it out to the beach and insuring you stay cool on the hottest of days. There are some other opportunities out there for you, however.

It’s hard to get a job in this economy to be sure but if you’re trying to get work and not seeing much success, it might be time to start building your resume up with volunteer experience.  Volunteer opportunities exist at many places in our community. Hospitals, homeless shelters, animal clinics, churches and community organizations are always looking for people to help out for an hour or two a week.

Signing up for a volunteer opportunity will let you try out different job experiences, help you make contacts in a field that you may one day want to work in and get references and experience to add to your resume.

VolunteenNation is a new site trying to encourage communities to post volunteer opportunities that are available to teens and connect interest teens with the volunteer opportunities they’re seeking. If you can’t find anything interesting there, you’re always welcome to come to the library and join our volunteer corps!

For those interested in large scale volunteer projects at the library, our next Teen Friends meeting will be at 4:00 on Tuesday, July 10.

Enjoy the easy livin’ of summertime but be sure to give back to your community when you have a chance!
