Better Nate Than Ever by Tim Federle

Better Nate Than Ever by Tim Federle is a 2013 middle grade novel that was nominated for both the Odyssey and Stonewall Awards. This book follows 13 year old Nate as he hops a bus to NYC to audition for E.T. the Musical, and the adventure is full of ups and downs, laughs and tears, and self-discovery. This book makes you feel all the feels! I found this book to be very relatable in a lot of ways. Sure I have never been a 13 year old boy, but I have been overwhelmed by NYC, terrified at an audition, and the one who has been the target of bullying. I think that the joy that Nate finds in the world of musical theater is a very real representation of the theater community as well as extremely relatable for me personally. This would be a great book for musical theater geeks, or for readers who like humorous realistic fiction like Drama by Raina Telgemeier or Jacky Ha-Ha by James Patterson.

I listened to the audiobook version of this book, which is read by the author. Fun fact: Tim Federle is the showrunner of Disney+’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series!

Both the audiobook and e-book can be found on Libby/Overdrive.
